Friday Night Safe Space

Support and social evening for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and allied youth (14-22) every Friday night, 7:00-9:30 p.m. at both our Harrisburg and Lancaster locations. Movies, coffeehouse nights, discussions, arts, field trips—you name it! See the Safe Space Rules and our calendar of activities.

Our Harrisburg chapter meets on the third floor of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Cathedral office building, at 221 N. Front Street. The group visits local art galleries for First Friday downtown every month and makes regular trips to City Island to use the arcade, batting cages, etc. Youth attending the Harrisburg chapter come from a variety of school districts and colleges from right here in Dauphin county to Cumberland, Perry and beyond.

Our Lancaster chapter meets at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Lancaster, 538 W. Chestnut Street. The UUCL has truly embraced Common Roads and the youth are even working on a mural project for one of the church’s classrooms. The Lancaster youth also spend time hanging out downtown in their city, enjoying the First Friday galleries and the Music Friday shows. Youth attending our Lancaster chapter come from a variety of school districts and colleges in Lancaster and York counties and beyond.

Safe Space Rules

Written by Common Roads youth

1. Everybody is free to label themselves as they wish. Even if you don’t agree, respect it. Be proud of who you are.

2. Everybody’s ideas, opinions, thoughts and concerns are heard and respected… by everyone.

3. We are here to socialize. We are here for support. Please control your hormones in this space and refrain from any inappropriate behavior.

4. Confidentiality is very important to all of us. Everything said here stays here.

5. Discrimination and homophobia will not be tolerated inside or outside of our space.

6. We don’t have maids, so do your part to help out. Our space is ours, so we need to respect it and keep it nice.

7. This is a safe space. If you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, please leave. If you came here looking for drugs or alcohol, please leave.

8. Anyone under the age of 18 will not leave the premises without parental permission if parent brought you to the group.

9. All cell phones are to be silenced or turned off during discussion sessions or meetings.

10. Please respect the person who is speaking: no cross-talk or side conversations during discussion sessions or presentations.
